Cleaning Stategies to Make Your Home Healthier during the New Year

1. Wipe down countertops on the regular basis. Countertops aren't only where meals are prepared, but it’s also where dirt, dust, bacteria and allergen particles floating in the air often settle. Should you have a countertop with granite or tile, it’s advisable to choose a mild cleaner and preferably one that will refresh the sealer. It is important to keep sealer fresh to prevent bacteria from getting in the porous areas of the stone.

2. Keep carpets and rugs clean. Vacuuming and routine cleaning are beneficial in maintaining cleaner carpets,
but are not really enough. As a result, the EPA recommends getting carpets cleaned by professionals at least one time each and every year. Homes with pets and/or children, it is recommended to choose a cleaning service, such as Chem-Dry, two or three times a year. For homeowners with pets, it’s considerably better to choose a professional cleaning service that also includes an effective urine detection and removal process. To eliminate the absolute most germs from your own own carpets and rugs, request adding a sanitizer into the cleaning approach to kill off and eliminate bacteria and also a protectant, which puts a protective coating for the carpet fibers and makes it much easier which will keep carpets cleaner for a longer period of time.

3. Don’t
forget about your upholstered furniture. Vacuuming upholstered furnishings are nearly as quick and easy is equally as important as carpets, specially in the high-traffic areas like family rooms. It’s recommended to vacuum the upholstery in your home once every other week and get it cleaned professionally once a year.

4. Sanitize high touch points
of your home, including door knobs, toilet handles, faucets and light switches. Spending several minutes sanitizing those areas, particularly pre and post guests come into your home, could go a long way toward minimizing the spread of germs. More preventive approaches to minimizing the spread of germs include being vigilant about washing your hands regularly in the day and putting a bottle of hand sanitizer in the high-traffic areas of your house, making it convenient and easy to have your hands clean and germ-free.

5. Use door mats or area rugs in entry ways and high-traffic areas,
these may do a great job of trapping dirt and allergens before they enter into the heart of the home. Simple truth is that carpets and rugs end up as filters that capture and trap dirt, dust and allergens and stop them from getting in the air and spreading throughout the home. On hard surfaces, these particles simply settle then are stirred back into the air any time there may be traffic and activity in the area. Using door mats and area rugs is an excellent and inexpensive way to prevent unwanted and unhealthy particles from getting deeper inside the home or from residing in the air where they might spread easier to members of your family.

6. Check and replace your heating and air conditioning filters. While furnaces
are necessary to keeping homes warm through the colder months, it’s important to replace the furnace air filter at regular intervals to prevent dirt, dust and other unhealthy particles from being distributed around the house. Follow the recommended replacement timing for every filter which is located on the package. To remember when it’s time to change the filter, write the date that you’re performing the replacement on the outer edge of the new filter that you’re installing to make it easy to know whenever your next one is due.

*Based on studies conducted by independent laboratories of Chem-Dry’s HCE (Hot Carbonating Extraction), P.U.R.T. (Pet Urine Removal Treatment), Granite Countertop Renewal, and Tile, Stone & Grout cleaning processes. Allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergen. Pet odor results based on testing with the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine. Pet urine bacteria results based on Chem-Dry’s HCE cleaning process and a sanitizer, combined with P.U.R.T. All bacteria results include use of sanitizer. Figures are an average across multiple tests.
